Terms & Privacy
The short version
- No accounts. You don't sign up, and we don't ask for your name or email.
- Your pages are read, then deleted. Photos and PDFs you send are used only to read the music and are deleted as soon as the reading is done.
- Your voice never leaves your device. The tuner, warm-ups and "sing this note" listen on your phone or computer. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.
- Your recent readings stay on your device. We don't keep a copy.
- Our analytics are anonymous. No cookies, no IP addresses stored, nothing that can follow you around.
- Fermata is free and provided as is. It does its best to read music correctly but can make mistakes.
Privacy policy
This policy explains what happens to your information when you use Fermata at tryfermata.app ("Fermata", "we", "us"). We built Fermata to collect as little as possible.
1. What you send us: sheet music
When you take a photo or choose a picture or PDF, it's sent over an encrypted connection to read the music. Before it leaves your device, the app crops the photo to the music. Then:
- Our music reader (running on Google Cloud in the United States) reads the notes.
- If our reader can't read the page, the page is sent to an AI service, Google Gemini or Groq, to read it instead. These services process it under their own terms. On free plans Google may use content sent to Gemini to improve its services.
- The reading (the notes, plus the page image so it can light up the notes) is sent back to your device.
- Our servers delete your page and everything made from it as soon as the reading is finished. We don't keep your music and we don't look at it.
Please don't upload pages with personal information written on them, and only upload music you have the right to use (see the Terms below).
2. Your microphone
The tuner, warm-ups and "sing this note" use your microphone to hear the pitch you're singing. This happens entirely on your device. Your voice is never recorded to a file, never uploaded, and never stored. You can turn microphone access off at any time in your browser or phone settings.
3. What stays on your device
- Recent readings: your last three readings (the music and page images) are saved in your browser so you can reopen them. Remove one with its × button, or clear your browser's site data to remove them all.
- Settings: small preferences such as your voice range for warm-ups.
These never leave your device, and we can't see them.
4. Anonymous analytics
To understand how Fermata is used and fix what breaks, we count a few things. Our analytics:
- use no cookies and no tracking across other sites;
- count visits and which features are used (for example "opened the tuner" or "a reading failed");
- note the country (worked out from your connection, which is then discarded), the type of device (phone, tablet or computer) and the website that linked you (just its name, such as instagram.com);
- count unique visitors with a code that is made from your connection details and changes every day, so it can't identify you or link your visits across days. Your IP address itself is never stored.
When a reading fails we keep a short note of the error message and how long it took, never the page itself. Analytics are kept for up to 13 months.
5. Services we use
| Service | What for |
|---|---|
| Vercel | Hosting the app and passing your page to the reader. |
| Google Cloud | Running our music reader. |
| Google Gemini, Groq | AI reading when our reader can't read a page. |
| Google Firestore | Storing the anonymous analytics counts. |
| Google Fonts | The app's typefaces. Your browser downloads them from Google, which sees your IP address when it does. |
Some of these services are in the United States, so your information may be processed there.
6. What we don't do
We don't sell or share your information, show ads, build profiles, or use your music or voice to train AI.
7. Children
Fermata is made for singers of all ages and asks for no personal information. If you're under the age where your country allows you to agree to online services yourself, please use Fermata with a parent's or guardian's permission.
8. Your choices and rights
Because we don't keep your pages or your voice and our analytics can't identify you, there's normally nothing about you for us to hand over or delete. You can clear your recent readings from your device at any time. If you have a question or request, contact us at the address below and we'll help.
9. Changes
If we change this policy we'll update it here and change the date at the top. If we ever start collecting something new, we'll say so clearly in the app first.
Terms of use
By using Fermata you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use it.
1. What Fermata is
Fermata is a free tool for singers. It reads photos and PDFs of sheet music and plays them on piano, and it includes a tuner, vocal warm-ups and pitch coaching. We may change, add or remove features, or pause the service, at any time.
2. Readings can be wrong
Reading music from a photo is hard. Fermata (and the AI it sometimes uses) can misread notes, rhythms, tempo or markings, especially on unclear, handwritten or crumpled pages. Always check important passages against your score, your teacher or your director. Warm-up scores and feedback are a practice aid, not a professional assessment.
3. Your music and copyright
- Only upload sheet music you have the right to use, for example music you own a copy of, public-domain music, or music you have permission to use.
- You keep all rights to what you upload. You let us process it only to give you your reading, and we delete it straight after.
- Fermata is for your own practice. Don't use it to copy, share or distribute music in a way that breaks copyright.
4. Fair use of the service
Please don't:
- upload anything illegal, harmful, or unrelated to music;
- try to overload, break into, reverse-engineer or disrupt Fermata or its servers;
- use automated tools to send large numbers of pages or scrape the service.
We may block access that breaks these rules.
5. Our work
The Fermata name, logo, design and software belong to us. The piano sound is the Salamander Grand Piano by Alexander Holm, used under the CC BY 3.0 licence, and Fermata uses open-source software including Audiveris, OpenSheetMusicDisplay, Tone.js and pitchy under their own licences.
6. No warranty
Fermata is provided free, "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, including that it will be accurate, uninterrupted or error-free, as far as the law allows.
7. Limitation of liability
As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for any loss arising from using or not being able to use Fermata, such as a misread note before a performance. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that can't be limited.
8. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed. If you keep using Fermata after a change, the new terms apply.
